Day 1 Where to Stay:įirst things first: where will you stay? We ultimately decided on an Airbnb in the River Arts District. I have been told that one can happily spend hours exploring the Biltmore… so if you have enough time, you may want to factor that in to your stay. This is not because I have anything against stately old homes, but rather because my priorities for a short trip like this lean toward the food- and outdoors- related. Notably, it does not include a visit to the Biltmore, arguably the biggest tourism draw to the region. All opinions are my own and have not been sponsored. This itinerary is scaled with a long weekend in mind. cities, there’s never been a better time to discover this mountain gem. destination to visit in 2017 and it is among Travel + Leisure’s top 15 U.S. I suppose now that it has been named as Lonely Planet’s top U.S. What follows is a short list of recommendations for how to spend three glorious days in Asheville. It is a place to take a minute to breathe and to remind yourself not to stress over the small stuff. It celebrates its local breweries and is beyond farm-to-fork. It welcomes you with its hippie charms, dazzles you with its seriously delicious food, and inspires you to get outside with its 360-degree mountain views. But for one reason or another, it just never happened.īut that recently changed – thank goodness – and I must say that Asheville does not disappoint. Since that is a short list of my favorite things, I really had no excuse not to have visited. It has been described to me by various East Coast friends as no less than charming, delicious, eclectic and outdoorsy. I recommend this destination.Confession: I have been meaning to visit Asheville, North Carolina for years. These generations make for great people watching and this is a place to do it. I’m a little older than this range and I’m appreciative of their tastes. I would say the menu and the store in general reflected the tastes of these generations. The crowd appeared to be mostly 20-30 somethings. Maybe some fried green tomatoes! I had one on my biscuit and it was tasty. If I visit again, and I hope to, I will try either the pulled pork, brisket, or something generic. However none of this matters, because the food is good and this is a destination spot. Nothing wrong with it, I just wasn’t feeling it. While the food was good, I wasn’t overjoyed with my meal. I felt sorry for the people outside having to endure the wait while looking at my delicious food. Off to our seats, which were in the very front window. After ordering and paying, it’s self-serve drinks and delicious spread acquiring. Picture of biscuit uploaded! BTW, none of the pictures I looked at, even come close to the crowd of people we encountered. I eeked out “country ham biscuit, grits, and biscuit donuts”. With 40+ minutes to look at the menu, I was still struggling when we made it to the order counter. I didn’t see anyone waiting to be seated and the line moved. A huge line, with what appeared a not so big dining room. Also, I was amazed at how well the line moved. So many places could learn from his example. This is customer service! Not only did this guy great people in line, he seated us, cleaned tables, and delivered food. He also provided samples of some spreads and maybe coffee before we parked (missed it). One of the owners, blessed us with menus. The ladies had not moved very much and there were several more patrons behind them. IMPORTANT NOTE: Biscuit Head does have parking validation passes. We did end up behind the restaurant in the pay to park lot. We dropped off the wives to save a spot in line, while us guys went in search of parking. The line started at the ordering counter and went outside and wrapped half-way around the side of the building. We opted for Biscuit Head! Granted it was a Sunday morning, but wow… The crowd was pretty big. We needed that one last moment to seal the experience. Our weekend in the Asheville area was coming to a close. We (four of us) decided on a late breakfast before leaving for home.
